Introduction to Reiki 1

About Reiki

Reiki is essentially the energy of God or the creator, termed by some as the Universal Life Force.  The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words-Rei and Ki.

The word Rei means higher spiritual consciousness.  This is the wisdom that comes from God .  It understands each person completely.  It knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows how to heal them.

The word Ki means the same as Chi i Chinese which is life energy.  As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through and around it.

Thus,  it is the God-Consciousness called Rei that guides the energy called Ki in the practice we call Reiki.  Reiki guides itself with it’s own wisdom, rather than requiring the direction of the practitioner.

Reiki is an ancient technique, though was “rediscovered recently in the late 1800’s, used for healing and spiritual growth to improve health and enhance the quality of life.  It is an amazingly simple technique to learn, but the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense.  It is one of a few healing modalities where the energy is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master.  The actual energy must be passed on from one person to another.

A Reiki session with a practitioner feels like a warm radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, spirit, and mind and creates many beneficial effects.

Reiki energy is available to everyone regardless of spiritual beliefs, religious background, or intellectual capacity.  One does not even have to believe in Reiki for it to work.  All that is required is an open mind and heart and a willingness to accept to be a channel of divine energy that flows through you and goes to exactly where it is needed in either yourself or another.

How Does Reiki Heal?

We are alive because life energy or Ki is flowing through us.  Ki flows within the physical body through pathways called chakras or meridians.  It also flows around us in a field of energy we call the aura.  Ki brings life to the physical organs and tissues as it flows through them and nourishes them with vital energy.  When the Ki is disrupted, it interferes with the healthy physical body and can cause illness.

Ki is responsive to thoughts and feelings.  When we have positive thoughts, we increase our flow of Ki and feel better.  When we have negative thoughts, our Ki is disrupted and diminished and we do not feel as good.  When we hold negative thoughts and feelings in rather than releasing them, they become lodged in the subconscious mind and attach themselves to the energy field and disrupt the flow of Ki.  Various organs and cells of the physical body can become affected and illness can occur.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy.  It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where negative thoughts and feelings are attached.  This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away.  In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens, and heals the energy pathways, creating balance within and around the body.

The Reiki Principles

The Reiki Principles were developed by Mikao Usui.  He encouraged his students to actively work with them  and  to discover their own meanings.  There are many different versions of the Principles but the main tenents remain the same.  They all encourage us to be in the moment, to remain positive in everything we do, and to offer ourselves to Spirit in service.

  I will live with gratitude:

I will not worry, I will look to the positive:

I will honor my parents, teachers, and elders:

I will deal with anger appropriately:

I will do my work honestly:

I will show love and respect for every living thing.

(Live with one Principle each day, feel it, see how it relates to your life. If you feel challenged by it, you may need to look at why it challenges you and release old thoughts and issues.)

History of Reiki

Dr. Mikao Usui  or Usui Sensei as he was called by his student was   a Japanese monk and teacher in Kyoto, Japan.  He rediscovered Reiki in the mid to late 1800’s.  He began an extensive study of healing phenomena and   studied ancient sutras, and discovered ancient sounds and symbols that were directly linked to the human body and nervous system which activated healing. He found that most healing methods required the practitioner to build up and then deplete his own life energy when giving treatments.  He wondered if it were possible to do healing work without depleting one’s own energy.

After more than 20 years of study, he declared one day to the monks of his monastery that he was going to a nearby mountain, believed to be Mount Kurama,  to fast and meditate for 21 days seeking to receive divine guidance on  healing.  He went to the mountain and gathered 21 stones for each day to count the days.  Each day he would through away a stone and in this way count time.  He became discouraged for after 20 days of fasting and meditating, he had not received any divine revelations on healing as he had been seeking.  Ready to descend down the mountain the next day in discouragement,  he went to sleep.  He was awoken in his sleep to see a ball of light coming towards him and hit him right in the forehead.  As it struck him he seen bubbles of all colors of the rainbows , which included symbols of Reiki including immediate knowledge of healing techniques.  A divine revelation he had been waiting for.

The tradition of Reiki was passed down through several people,  known as the “Grand Masters” of Reiki, including Phyllis Lei Furumoto.  Mrs. Furumoto was the first woman who was taught Reiki asn was also the first American who brought it to this country in the mid –1970’s.  Since then it has spread quickly worldwide and in numerous variations.  All variations of Reiki have their gifts and are equally effective.

How does Reiki work?

There are different opinions about how Reiki enters the body. Some believe it is pulled upward from the Earth’s grounding energies through the soles of the feet.  Others believe it enters through the top of the head, while still others believe it flows through their hearts from the source or God .   Essentially, know that this divine energy comes from one source, God, and flows through you and you act as a conduit of divine healing energy.  Reiki works like a thermostat that regulates the body turning off and on when needed.  Reiki flows slowly or rapidly as needed and sometimes flows smoothly while other times erratically.  Healing energies flow out of the practitioners body through the palms of the hands as they touch the recipients body.  A practitioners hands may or may not heat up but fortunately, Reiki works whether you feel it or not.  Reiki sensations can be very subtle and may be overlooked so don’t judge yourself or feel like you aren’t doing anything if you don’t feel anything.  Have faith and know Reiki IS working no matter what.

Before you begin Reiki

Reiki energy is never harmful to yourself of others.  It can never be taken away from you, or you will never lose it , even if not used for many years.  Once given from a teacher you will always “have“

Reiki.  While doing Reiki, your intent is everything.  The Reiki energy will flow to wherever it is most needed, but your clear intent to allow it to flow through you is helpful.  Reiki may not always work in the way we expect, it can be very subtle and very powerful.  Healing is like peeling away an onion, layers of emotions and thought forms attached to our energy and body.  Patience and consistency will help us get to the core.  As Reiki practitioners, we are not here to “heal” someone.  We are simply channels for Divine Light and healing energy.

Beginning Reiki

The first “rule” in Reiki is to always channel Reiki to yourself first to learn more about what the energy feels like, what it does, and how to expand your capacity to allow more energy in.  We cannot assist healing on anyone else until we are clear and balanced ourselves.

When doing Reiki , whether on yourself or others, keep your fingers cupped together loosely. Usui reportedly said,”scattered fingers, scattered energy.”  Keeping the fingers close together allows the energy to flow easier and in a tighter area, rather than all over the place.  Place hands lightly on yourself or others, never applying pressure.

The length of time for each position is flexible depending on the amount of time you have.  If doing a full session, you may do 5 minutes on each position or 30 if needed, use your intuition.  Another may take 10 minutes.  You can never do it “wrong”.  Reiki always knows where to go.

When beginning to do Reiki, you intent to begin may start the flow of energy, you may consciously ask the energy to be turned on, visualizing a light switch turning, or simply stating, “Reiki on”. Or you can do a small ritual of holding your hands face up, stating, “I ask that this Reiki energy be used for my highest good or the highest good of ________.”  By stating this, you allow the energy to flow wherever it is most needed. You will find your own way to activate the energy.  I simply ask”  Send forth your healing energy father so that I may be a channel of your divine love and grace to bring healing to-----------and to where it is needed most. Thank you.”  When you are finished, the energy will either dissipate, you can simply say thank you ,  or Reiki off.  Use your intuition . There is no wrong way to do it.  Most importantly, always say fill your heart with thanks.

Chakras

A Reiki treatment touches upon all major chakras.  There are seven power centers in your body called chakras.  The state of each chakra reflects the health of a particular area of your body.

Each chakra reflects your mental, emotional, and spiritual well being.  Every thought and experience you have had in your life gets filtered through the chakra “databases.”

Each event is recorded in your cells.  In other words your biography becomes your biology.  When a chakra center is blocked or compromised, emotional, mental or physical illness can manifest.

Each chakra contains a distinct color of energy that corresponds in order similar to the rainbow.
